Sergeant Cornbread: (enters) Where’s the rest of the troops? They told me to be here on time. I’m always on time!

Granny Grace: (enters) Sergeant Cornbread! It’s great to see you. How are you?

Sergeant Cornbread: I’m on time, that’s how I am!

Granny Grace: Actually, you’re  a bit early, but I’m sure the kids will be here soon.

Sergeant Cornbread: I’m not early. Early is on time and on time is late!

Granny Grace: If early is on time and on time is late then what is late?

Sergeant Cornbread: Late is unacceptable!

Granny Grace: Did you just say that being on time is unacceptable?

Sergeant Cornbread: No, I said that early is on time.

Granny Grace: I thought on time was on time.

Sergeant Cornbread: On time is late! Late is unacceptable!

Granny Grace: Military time is so confusing.

Carlos: (enters) Hello Granny Grace and Sergeant Cornbread!

Granny Grace: Hi, Carlos. Is Melody with you?

Melody: (enters) Here I am! Sorry, I’m a little late but my mom asked me to clean my room last night and I didn’t do it, so this morning I had to shove everything under the bed before she noticed.

Carlos: You lied to your mom before church?

Melody: I didn’t lie. I just let her believe it was clean. Besides, I don’t feel like I should have to clean my room when I don’t want to. It’s my room and I should be able to keep it the way I want.

Sergeant Cornbread: You’re sliding down a slippery slope, soldier!

Granny: I agree with Sergeant Cornbread. The Bible tells us to obey our parents and you disobeyed your mom and were dishonest with her.

Sergeant Cornbread: That’s the kind of thinking that will take you of course and leave you wide open to an attack from the enemy.

Carlos: It reminds me of our Bible verse, Ephesians 6:11. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

Sergeant Cornbread: It reminds me of David.

Melody: We just learned about David. He’s the boy in the Bible who killed the giant named Goliath. God chose David to be the next King of Israel. Why would my messy room remind you of David?

Granny Grace: I think he may be thinking about when David’s parents gave him the chore of taking food to his brothers when they were serving as soldiers. God has a purpose and plan for our lives but in order to stay the course we have to put on the FULL Armor of God, not just some of it. If David disobeyed his parents and refused to go take the food to his brothers then he would have never shown up to defeat Goliath.

Sergeant Cornbread: That’s a good point, but I was thinking of my old army buddy, David. I was visiting him at the cemetery the other day. He was always forgetting his helmet and one day I took a bad blow to the head and it ricocheted off my helmet and hit David right in the head and David went down. I was protected because I wore my helmet and If he hadn’t forgotten his helmet then it wouldn’t have been so bad for him.

Granny Grace: Sergeant Cornbread! Although I really do sympathize with you and I am so sorry you lost your friend and he died in war, you can not be telling your war stories to these children! It’s too graphic and highly inappropriate.

Melody: I am totally freaking out!

Carlos: I’m sorry Melody. This just got dark!

Sergeant Cornbread: What war stories? David isn’t dead. We were in the barracks and somebody dropped a can of beans on my head from the top bunk and it bounced off my helmet and hit David in the head. He went down, got a big lump and a couple stitches, but he pulled through.

Carlos: You said you were visiting him at the cemetery.

Sergeant Cornbread: He mows the lawn there. It’s right up the street from my house.

Melody: Oh my!

Granny Grace: Oh my, indeed.

Carlos: I think the main point is that we are soldiers in God’s army and our main mission in life is to tell others about Jesus so they can be saved.

Melody: I love Jesus and I love telling others about Jesus and how much God loves them.

Granny: I know you love Jesus, Melody. There is no greater purpose in life than to lead someone else to Jesus. God has many great things planned for your life, but telling people about Jesus is your most important purpose of all.

Sergeant Cornbread: That’s why the Bible tells us in  Ephesians 6:11, “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” We put on God’s holy, spiritual armor by learning and obeying God’s word.

Granny Grace: When we obey every part of God’s word in every situation, then we are fully covered in God’s Armor.

Carlos: The devil will try to trick us into thinking that maybe something isn’t so bad even when we know it’s against God’s word.

Sergeant Cornbread: That’s part of the devil’s schemes, but when we choose to obey God in everything we do then we will never fall into his trap.

Granny Grace: Remember, telling people about Jesus is great, but if we disobey God, even in matters that might seem small, it could cause someone to not believe.

Melody: I would never want that to happen. I don’t want to get comfortable with sin. I want to always obey God.

Sergeant Cornbread: Always obeying God is how we put on the Full Armor of God.

Carlos: The Armor of God is our belt of truth. Jesus is our belt of truth and in Jesus is our purpose. Next, we have the breastplate of righteousness, sandals of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God, the Bible

Granny Grace: Very good! You’ve been studying. We will learn more about each piece of God’s Armor in the weeks to come.

Sergeant Cornbread: And just like a soldier needs every piece of his armor to stay protected, you need every piece of your spiritual armor to accomplish all the good things God has planned for you.

Melody: I’m going to go home and tell my mom the truth and clean my room for real this time. Thank you all for helping me get back on track. Bye, everybody! (exits)

Sergeant Cornbread: I’m proud of you, soldier! I’m also hungry, so I’m going to set off on a mission to find some cornbread! (exits)

Carlos: That actually sounds pretty good right now. Wait for me! (exits)

Granny Grace: I already have lunch ready! I knew you would be hungry! (exits)
