Sergeant Cornbread: (enters loudly) Attention! Today we’re going to do push-ups until you sweat out every drop of energy you have! Then when you think you can’t go on, I’m going to run you until you collapse! Uphill all the way!

Granny Grace: (enters quickly) Sergeant Cornbread! How many times do I have to tell you that we won’t be doing physical training in church?

Sergeant Cornbread: You were late and I didn’t know what else to do.

Granny Grace: I’m not late; I’m on time.

Sergeant Cornbread: On time is late. Early is on time.

Granny Grace: Okay, okay. Either way, let’s get started.

Sergeant Cornbread: Roger that! As soon as Carlos and Melody show up, we can start the action.

Carlos: (enters) Here I am!

Melody: (enters a little sad) I’m here too. I don’t know how much help I’ll be though because I can’t do anything right.

Granny Grace: Awe, Melody, why would you say that? What’s going on?

Melody: I failed my math test. I studied so hard, but no matter how hard I try, I still can’t understand a lot of it. I even prayed, but I’ll never get it! I’m so stupid.

Carlos: You’re not stupid, Melody. You’re very smart. You always memorize your Bible verse before I do.

Melody: That’s easy for me. I love anything to do with memorization or words but math is so hard for me.

Granny Grace: God made us all different and unique. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. We all have different gifts and talents. Struggling with learning something doesn’t make you stupid. We all have different ways of learning different subjects and sometimes it takes awhile to find the way that works best.

Melody: But I prayed! I just can’t do math! I will never get better at it!

Carlos: I know you’re struggling, but if you’re praying and then going around saying you can’t, isn’t that a little counterproductive? I think that’s the right word. Counterproductive?

Melody: Counterproductive means to have the opposite of the desired effect. Like if you wanted to clean the floor but tossed mud on it instead then that would be counterproductive.

Carlos: Exactly! When you pray and then speak the opposite of what you pray for then you’re speaking a curse on yourself.

Melody: I don’t ever curse or use bad words.

Sergeant Cornbread: Carlos isn’t talking about just a list of bad words, he’s talking about the negative things that we speak. Our words have power. Remember how Jesus “cursed” the fig tree. He didn’t shout a bunch of bad words at it.

Granny Grace: That’s right. Complaining, gossiping or talking bad about other people, saying hurtful and negative things are all curses. Jesus cursed the tree by saying that it would never produce fruit again.

Carlos: And it didn’t! The tree shriveled up and died! Jesus cursed it with his words.

Granny Grace: That’s why Jesus tells us in James 3:10-12, “Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.”

Sergeant Cornbread: Jesus wanted to teach us a powerful lesson. The words we choose to speak really matter. Nothing is more powerful than God’s word. God’s word is the Sword Of The Spirit. God’s word is a powerful weapon and speaking God’s word makes great things happen!

Granny Grace: Instead of saying you can’t do something that is hard for you, find a Bible verse that supports what you are trying to accomplish and speak that instead.

Melody: I would but I don’t know any Bible verses about math.

Carlos: Philippians 4:13 says, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. That was a hard one for me to memorize, but you helped me and I never forgot it.

Melody: That’s a good one. I will start saying that instead of saying I can’t.

Sergeant Cornbread: Chin up, soldier! You’re doing a good job!

Melody: Thank you, Sergeant Cornbread. Thank you all for helping me.

Granny Grace: You are so welcome, Melody.

Sergeant Cornbread: Keep using your Sword to slash down all the lies of the enemy. Speak God’s word!

Calos: Will you help me memorize James 3:10-12, Melody?

Melody: Yes. “Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.” I already have it memorized! But, I still need to work on memorizing my multiplication.

Carlos: I will help you with your math and you can help me with my Bible verse and vocabulary words!

Melody: Perfect! Let’s go! (exits)

Carlos: Let’s get something to eat first! (exits)

Sergeant Cornbread: That’s right, Granny made cornbread and I’m so hungry I could eat the entire pan! (exits)

Granny Grace: He’s not kidding. I’ve seen him eat the entire pan before. See you next time, everybody! (exits)
