Sergeant Cornbread: (enters loudly and commanding) Alright, soldiers! I hope you’re ready to run and march and sweat!

Granny Grace: (enters) Sergeant Cornbread! You’re in church! You’re not on your military base!

Sergeant Cornbread: Yes, ma’am, Granny Grace! I do realize that but you said you wanted me to help you get these young warriors ready for battle!

Carlos: (enters) Did somebody say battle? Who’s fighting?

Melody: (enters) Fighting? In church? This is not good!

Granny Grace: Nobody is fighting. Sergeant Cornbread was just a little confused.

Sergeant Cornbread: I’m not confused. No, ma’am! You asked me to help prepare God’s soldiers for battle.

Granny Grace: You’re absolutely right, I sure did. The battle I was speaking of is of a spiritual kind. It isn’t a fight that we have against other people.

Carlos: Speaking of fighting, there are these two boys at school that won’t quit calling me names and it just makes me so mad at them. I’m not going to fight them but to be honest, sometimes I want to.

Melody: Oh, I know how you feel! There is a girl at school that is so mean to me, she is spreading lies about me and I have never done anything to her at all. I hardly know her. I really want to get back at her though. I happen to know that her dad is in jail, maybe I should spread that around the school so she can see how it feels. After all, I wouldn’t be lying.

Sergeant Cornbread: It sounds like you two are facing some spiritual battles of your own but the Bible tells us that our fight isn’t with people, our fight is with the devil.

Carlos: The devil isn’t the one calling me names every day!

Granny Grace: No, but the devil uses people to try to ruin our relationship with God. He does anything he can to get us to sin and disobey God.

Melody: So, you mean to tell me that the girl at school that keeps lying about me is serving the devil?

Sergeant Cornbread: Satan can use people without them even knowing it if they don’t have Jesus in their hearts.

Carlos: Then how do we stop others from being mean to us?

Granny Grace: You can’t control how anyone else acts but you can always control how you act and how you respond when somebody is being unkind to you. It’s not always easy, but you can choose to obey God.

Sergeant Cornbread: Think about Noah.

Melody: I know who Noah is. He’s the guy in the Bible who built the ark.

Granny Grace: That’s right, God told Noah to build an ark, a huge boat.

Sergeant Cornbread: It wasn’t an easy task considering they didn’t have any power tools back then or trucks or forklifts. The ark was longer than a football field and taller than a three-story building! Could you imagine how long it would take to build a ship like that without any of the machines we have today? It took Noah 120 years!

Carlos: I don’t want to seem rude, but I don’t see what any of this has to do with me.

Granny Grace: Keep listening. You have more in common with Noah than you think.

Carlos: I do?

Granny Grace: Yes, you do.

Melody: He does?

Granny Grace: Yes, you do too. As Christians, we all do.

Sergeant Cornbread: What God told Noah to do seemed crazy to the people that didn’t know God and back in those days nobody except Noah and his small family obeyed God or listened to God’s word. The people were evil and mean and totally turned away from God. This is why God told Noah to build the ark. God was going to flood the earth and destroy all the wicked people but God had a plan to protect Noah and his family.

Granny Grace: As Christians, all of us can expect to experience some of the same things that Noah did.

Melody: I really hope I’m not going to have to build an ark!

Granny Grace: No, you won’t have to build an ark but when Noah was obeying God, the rest of the people in the world were laughing at him, mocking him, teasing him  and calling him names.

Carlos: That I can relate to.

Melody: No kidding!

Sergeant Cornbread: The Bible tells us that we are fighting a spiritual battle and that our fight isn’t against other people, but with satan. Satan wants us to believe that our fight is with other people so he uses people to be mean to us. Satan uses people that don’t know Jesus to try to get us to disobey God. Satan wants us to say mean things back to these people and fight with them. However, God tells us not to mean to people who are mean to us. God promises to bless us for not being unkind to people who are mean to us.

Carlos: It is very hard to be nice to anyone who is being mean to me!

Granny Grace: It is difficult to be nice to people who are unkind to us. It may be one of the hardest things God tells us to do but we have to try to look at things the way God sees them. People are like this because they don’t know Jesus.

Melody: God loves everyone and he wants everyone to accept Jesus so they can be saved and live forever with him in heaven.

Sergeant Cornbread: That’s right, soldier! How would they ever know God’s love if we act the same way everyone else in the world acts? God loved us before we ever knew him or loved him and it is up to us to show the world that same love.

Granny Grace: If Noah was mean to all the people who were mean to him, he would have never been able to complete his work of building the ark. Obeying God gave Noah the power he needed to accomplish great things and it also protected him and his family.

Sergeant Cornbread: The most important mission we will ever have is sharing the love of Jesus with the world. Obeying God gives us the power to accomplish this and so much more!

Melody: So, when people are unkind to me I have to remember that my fight isn’t with them. I have to fight to obey God and do what God says no matter what!

Carlos: This must be why God tells us in 1 Peter 3:9, “Do not repay evil for evil or insult for insult. On the contrary, repay evil with a blessing, because to this you were called so you may inherit a blessing.”

Sergeant Cornbread: Good job, soldier! Hooah! When I put on my army uniform, the world knows I represent the army. We have a code of conduct that we must follow and if I were to go out into the world acting badly while wearing that uniform, I wouldn’t just disgrace myself but it would make the entire army look bad.

Granny Grace: That is very true. If we say we’re a Christian and we are unkind to others then people that don’t know Jesus will think that is what God and being a Christian is all about. They won’t come to know the true love of Jesus because as Christians we represent God and the Kingdom of Heaven.

Melody: I am so glad I came to church today!

Carlos: So am I! Let’s go pray and ask God to help us be kind to those who aren’t being kind to us!

Melody: Okay! That’s a good idea. We need all the help and strength we can get! I hope everybody has a great week! (exit)

Carlos: See you next time! (exit)

Granny Grace: Thank you for all your help today. (exit)

Sergeant Cornbread: Don’t forget to memorize your Bible verse, 1 Peter 3:9! That’s a spiritual pushup! Next time I see you, I want to see you flexing those spiritual muscles! Hup, hup, hup! (exit)
